When the news of Sigurd's death came, Thorfinn's older half-brothers divided Orkney and Shetland between them. Before setting out for Ireland, he had sent Thorfinn, then aged five, to be fostered by his maternal grandfather, the King of Scots. The locations of Orkney, Shetland, the Hebrides, Mann and various mainland territories in the late 11th centuryĮarl Sigurd was killed at the Battle of Clontarf on 23 April 1014. His elder half-brothers Einar, Brusi and Sumarlidi survived to adulthood, while another brother called Hundi died young in Norway, a hostage at the court of King Olaf Trygvasson. Thorfinn was the youngest of the five known sons of Earl Sigurd Hlodvirsson, but the only son of Sigurd's marriage to an unknown daughter of King Malcolm II (Máel Coluim mac Cináeda). Much of the information the latter contains is "hard to corroborate" although it is a "generally credible" narrative in this context. The main sources are St Olaf's saga and the more detailed Orkneyinga Saga, which were first compiled in Iceland in the early 13th century. The sources for Thorfinn's life are almost exclusively Norse sagas, which were written down long after the time of the events in his life they record. His life has been the subject of various works of historical fiction. His diplomacy with the Norwegian court has also been interpreted in various ways. There are numerous problems associated with the chronology of Thorfinn's life and in identifying his relationships to the southern polities of the Kingdom of Alba (the precursor to modern Scotland) and the Kingdom of Moray. On his death in the latter half of the 11th century he was followed as earl by his sons Paul and Erlend. In his later years he went on a pilgrimage to Rome and he was instrumental in making Orkney and Shetland part of mainstream Christendom. A sizeable part of the latter saga's account concerns his wars with a "King of Scots" named Karl Hundason whose identity is uncertain. The Heimskringla of Icelandic historian Snorri Sturluson, and the anonymous compiler of the Orkneyinga Saga wrote that Thorfinn was the most powerful of all the jarls of Orkney and that he ruled substantial territories beyond the Northern Isles. Thorfinn married Ingibiorg Finnsdottir, daughter of Finn Arnesson, Jarl of Halland. He ruled alone as jarl for about a third of the time that he held the title and jointly with one or more of his brothers or with his nephew Rögnvald Brusason for the remainder. He was the youngest of five sons of Jarl Sigurd Hlodvirsson and the only one resulting from Sigurd's marriage to a daughter of Malcolm II of Scotland. 1065), also known as Thorfinn the Mighty ( Old Norse: Þorfinnr inn riki), was an 11th-century Jarl of Orkney. By having a strong notecard outline, your writing process will be more focused and smoother. ![]() If your act 3 doesn’t tie up all loose ends presented in act one, tie them up. If you realize you have too many characters, combine them. If you have an excessive amount of scenes, start cutting them out. If you feel bored reading through your notecards, that’s a sign the pacing is off. Now that it’s all there, don’t be afraid to make changes. The purpose of an outline is to get everything out of your head and put right in front of you. This is the time to cut out weak and unnecessary scenes, add in transitions, get rid of pointless characters and so on. Work on it until you see no more problems. Repeat! Just like you rewrite a script, you should rewrite your outline. This is the time to wrap everything up and solve all the problems your protagonist has faced to this point. From here, outlining your 3rd act should be a breeze. However, if you don’t want to break act 2 into two parts, just remember that by the midpoint of the story, it should take a turn and raise the stakes. Act 2 part 1 should be from the beginning of the act to midpoint (around page 55) and act 2 part 2 should be from midpoint to the end of the act.īreaking it down this way makes it much easier to tackle the 60+ pages. Step 3. The best way to tackle the depths of Act 2 is by breaking it into two parts. Have in mind how many pages you want your final draft to be and then be mindful of that when building your scenes. Whether you believe you should have 10 notecards per act like Blake Snyder does or 14 notecards like Syd Field does, make sure all your acts feel complete but not overstuffed before moving on. However, only use a PENCIL to number the scenes because they will most likely change in later steps. This is so that the notecards can never get out-of-order. Once I get those first 4 notecards done, I move to the rest of Act 1.Īfter I complete a notecard, in the bottom right corner, I number what scene it is. In Act 1, the beats I choose are the opening image, theme, inciting incident, and the break into act 2. I tend to write the beat notecards first. ![]() This is where you include the scene header, minimal action lines, and any dialogue that pops into mind. For each scene you want in Act 1, write it on a notecard. Then, write your beats out on the top corner of your notecard.ĭon’t fill in any other information yet since this step is only about assigning the card where the beat will go. For a short script, it varies depending on the intended length. For feature-length scripts, there are about 15 beats. Step 2. Decide how many beats you want in your script. The purpose is to not have to stack or overlap your notecard, but to have them each laid out with their own space. Make sure you have enough space to layout out notecards in accordance to the 3 acts. If you don’t have a big enough desk, I suggest getting some painters tape and putting the notecards on the wall or closet doors. From there, designate a large space to layout the notecards. Colored notecards work great for dividing between the 3 Acts. Note: For this outlining method, I follow Blake Snyder’s Beat Sheet for structure purposes.įor each beat, I write it in the top corner of the notecard and highlight it. The notecard method makes outlining easy and can take the intimidation out of tackling a screenplay. While some screenwriters write strictly from passion, most find it necessary to have a outline. Not only is it the basic structure of a feature or short film, it gives the writer a chance to fix plot holes, attack multiple angles, monitor length, spark creativity and serve as a layout for beats and act turns. ![]() I wouldn't do one without doing the other, so at this point it was a choice between merging them to make one, more complex structure, or not doing them at all. Each structure takes hours upon hours of work, both art-wise as well as creative writing-wise. ![]() I can't spare enough hours to accomodate both Shinto and Daoism. There is more similarities between them than you probably realize. Shinto and Daoism are both about balance, harmony, attracting opposites and venerating ancestry. This is an argument for them two merging into one ideology to survive 3 thousand years. Shinto and Daoism together only have a 1% of followers compared to Christianity. The game takes place 3000 years into the future. Daoism has 20 million.Ĭhristianity has 2.5 billion followers (lower estimate). Shinto has 3 million followers worldwide. Creating ideological styles takes a tremendous amount of that time, so I personally decided to merge both Shinto and Taoism into one structure and if you bear with me I will explain why. We use something called ‘work-hours’ to evaluate how to distribute time into various ingame features. I feel personally attacked and I hate every fiber of your being.Ī: Mod development is in many ways similar to game development. Q: I disagree with you merging Taoism and Shinto into one structure. Q: Is it compatible with another mod that adds memes?Ī: Depends on what memes such mod adds. Q: Where should this mod be placed in the mod load order queue?Ī: Under Ideology, our Framework and any mods that specifically mention having to be above this mod. Please use the pinned Suggestions thread for it! Remember: You can use dev-mode to tweak ideologies, disable specific precepts, roles etc!Ī: Check mod options! You can increases number of memes, styles, rituals, relics and ideo buildings.Ī: Without a doubt, we accept all suggestions. ![]() Q: I don’t like certain meme, can I remove it?Ī: No, this whole mod comes as a bundle and there is no way to remove certain elements of it. You can however edit ideologies in dev-mode. With Vanilla Ideology Expanded - Memes and Structures you will be able to create powerful psykers that simply love chocolate, a corporate scrap trading business, a fishing republic, a bunch of god-king radicals, mechanoid technocratic union and much, much more.Ī: Can I add it mid-playthrough to an existing save?Ī: Yes, albeit to no effect, as ideologies are only created upon starting a new game. It should greatly expand what Ideology has to offer, and meshes nicely with the rest of the DLC. This mod adds 36 new memes, alongside many new structures, rituals, precepts, specialist roles, items, objects and mechanics. This should increase longevity of the game and also make it way more unique and personalised. With unique memes, players will be able to diversify their playthrough every time they play. For some reason certain obvious choices like Shinto, Taoism and Eldritch were missing from the base DLC, and this mod is here to introduce them to the ideology creation. The goal of the Memes and Structures mod is to add unique memes, and… well, structures to your game. [Vanilla Ideology Expanded is a mini-series of mods aimed at expanding the content in ideology - be it memes, relics and symbols or icons alike.
